ARTIST STATEMENT
Taia Akulova’s work embodies the "aesthetics of expressive gesture," exploring deep cultural archetypes and mythological themes. Her paintings, rich in intuitive and dream-like imagery, serve as a medium to investigate the relationship between the self and the Other. Akulova’s art delves into the subconscious, translating internal and external challenges into powerful visual narratives. Through her expressive oil paintings, she seeks to uncover the universal and timeless truths embedded within human experience, creating a dialogue that transcends the personal and the collective.
BIO
Taia Akulova is a contemporary artist known for her distinctive style, which she describes as “the aesthetics of expressive gesture.” Her work often explores cultural archetypes and mythological themes, translating intuitive and dream-like images into vivid oil paintings. Born in 1990 in Siberia, Russia, Taia has been immersed in art since a young age, growing up in a creative environment and eventually earning a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Novosibirsk State Academy of Architecture and Art.
Throughout her career, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Some of her notable solo shows include the “Cloud Assistant” exhibition at Art El artistic space in Novosibirsk in 2022. She has also taken part in various group exhibitions, such as the Siberian Biennial of Design and Contemporary Art, Female Art Night in Los Angeles, 2024.
In addition to her work as a painter, Taia Akulova is also involved in interior design through the studio Art Twin Design, which she co-founded with her twin brother Gleb Skotnikov. Currently, she is based in Los Angeles, where she continues to develop her artistic practice.
